About Kevin

Kevin Dong (he/they) is a music director, pianist, keyboardist, singer, and instrumentalist who performs all around the SF Bay Area. 

Kevin is primarily involved in musical theater around the Bay, playing with pit orchestras on piano, keyboard and other instruments. They are very excited to make their debut as Music Director of Young Frankenstein with Pittsburg Theatre Company (Pittsburg, California), opening in October of 2023. (See upcoming events)

Kevin is happy to be joining Chorus Eclectic as their collaborative pianist / accompanist.

In the community, Kevin is a regular member of the Violin II section in Peninsula Symphony Orchestra, a bass voice in Masterworks Chorale Bay Area and its affiliated chamber choir Serenade, and often participates in sessions with the Awesöme Orchestra Collective on violin, piano, and voice. 

Kevin has also previously played with the San Francisco Lesbian/Gay Freedom Band (clarinet), Bay Area Rainbow Symphony (violin), and Mission Chamber Orchestra (violin).

Kevin's primary instruments are piano, keyboard, violin, voice, and clarinet. For fun, they additionally dabble in accordion, guitar, bass guitar, and drum set, to name but a few.

Career

Growing up in Seattle, Kevin graduated in 2013 from the University of Washington with a BS in Computer Science, minoring in music. Soon afterwards, they moved to the San Francisco Bay Area to work as a software engineer. 

During his 10 years in software development, Kevin began playing piano and keyboard (among other instruments) with BareStage Productions at the University of California, Berkeley. Although he never attended Cal as a student, he continued to play for their musical productions for many years, working with many talented musicians. Over time, Kevin began to play professionally for theaters all around the Bay Area, including Youth Musical Theater Company (YMTC), Berkeley Playhouse, and Children's Musical Theater San Jose (CMTSJ).

In 2023, after a long pandemic and much self-reflection, Kevin decided finally to commit to a career of music-making and today they are amidst that transition from software developer to career musician. They continue to be heavily involved in musical theater, while exploring work in collaborative piano and other musical endeavors.

Musical Theater

Kevin thrives in musical theater. They are experienced in piano and keyboard/synth performance in the orchestra pit and often program their own keyboard patches and concerts in MainStage. They also have pit experience playing violin, guitar, and accordion in various shows, as well as piano-accompanying vocal auditions, rehearsals, performances. To date, Kevin has played in the pit orchestras of over 25 musical theater productions, with more on the horizon. (See upcoming events)
